In Memory of Professor Engelhardt

30.11.2018

The Ruhr-Universität Bochum, the Faculty of Management and Economics and the Institute of Management (ifu) at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum deeply regret the passing of. Prof. em. Dr. Dr. h.c. Werner H. Engelhardt, who died on 28th November 2018 at the age of 86 years.

Following his university education which he completed with a post-doctoral teaching qualification in 1968, he accepted the offer of a position at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum and worked at the Faculty of Management and Economics as Professor of Business Management, in particular Applied Business Administration III (Marketing), until he retired in 1997.

His pioneering research focused above all on the highly topical field of services and capital goods marketing and in 1996 he was awarded with an honorary doctor title by the Heinrich-Heine-Universität in Düsseldorf. Apart from research, teaching was of particular importance to him and he dedicated himself to it with great passion and exceptional enthusiasm. Generations of students and countless researchers received the necessary tools for their working life from Professor Engelhardt

Engelhardt
In addition to research and teaching he also contributed significantly to the development of the Faculty of Management and Economics. He is considered the genius behind the Bochum Economics model, which closely links the course content of business management and economics. Moreover, he was actively engaged in the academic self-administration of the university, not only did he serve as Dean of the Faculty many times but he was also prorector for structure, planning and finance at the university.

Fifty years ago Prof. Engelhardt was one of the founding fathers of the Institute of Management at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum (formerly Institute of Management and Operations Research) because at the time he was quick to see the need to link theoretical research with practical application in the field of management and he also recognised the importance of an interdisciplinary collaboration between economists, lawyers and engineers. As a result, the Institute of Management is an interdisciplinary oriented, comprehensive institute to this day.

The Faculty, Institute of Management and the Ruhr-Universität Bochum mourn an outstanding researcher, professor, colleague and advisor. We shall miss his enthusiasm for his work and his warm personality and shall remember him with deep respect.
