The article "Optimal distribution of operating hours over operating rooms using probabilities" by Lisa Koppka, M. Sc., Dr. Lara Wiesche, Dr. Matthias Schacht and Prof. Dr. Werners has been published in the scientific journal “European Journal of Operational Research” and is also available online. In this article an optimization model is introduced, which depending on the patient structure tactically distributes the total available operating time over the different operating rooms in order to improve performance.

Increasing demand for medical treatment poses an ever increasing challenge for hospitals. The efficient utilization of hospital resources in wards, departments and also within the various clinical departments can be supported by methods of Operations Research. Especially the surgical department of a hospital is crucial for restoring a patient’s health, although this department is subject to major uncertainties caused by fluctuating demand, surgery time and sudden emergencies. By taking adequate account of these uncertain planning parameters this article shows that it is possible to optimally distribute operating hours over operating rooms and evaluates the results in an extensive simulation study.
